“Gli adesivi nell’industria del mobile” (Adhesives in the furniture industry)
Author: Franco Bulian

It is difficult to write a technical book. In general, authors from any sector aim at sending a message with their words. But in the scientific field, since his aim is to describe an objective reality and make it as clear as possible, a scientific author must also choose the right technical level for his writing and find the most suitable language for that level and tone – fluent and descriptive or essential and factual.

The right level depends on the target reader. Unlike in common literature, the author cannot focus on his own needs. He can range from the didactic level, which can be understood by anyone even if they approach the topic for the first time, up to the “metaphysical” level, which only deals with theoretical models to assess the validity of scientific research and design new applications.

Franco Bulian’s book is for those who use adhesives professionally or for fun, even though they have no theoretical knowledge, but would like to understand the mechanisms by which adhesives fulfil the purpose for which they are created. Concepts and information are presented in a narrative and simple way (tone), but they can also be read in a more informed way, as they point to more complex aspects. The book is therefore also for those who have a university-level knowledge of this topic and need to approach adhesives for the first time. The author always focusses on the correct use of these materials in order to ensure maximum performance of end products. Operators should always make informed choices, suitable to their level of knowledge and their function – and the book fully meet this need.

The author himself speaks of “dosing” theory and practice. This intent is already clear from the chapters’ titles, and even more so when reading on.

Another peculiarity of this book is its specific target sector: the furniture industry. Nowadays, furniture is often built with less noble materials then wood, although wood-derived. Without further investigating the reasons for this, the choice to make furniture with wood or wood-derived material is a common practice, also due to the need to use renewable materials. On the other hand, significant innovations are being introduced in the field of adhesives, especially because the increasingly widespread multi-material products call for an easy and light coupling, as happens in every industrial sector. Bulian has also included a few references to the science of polymers as essential components of adhesives, but also as structural or surface coatings and components, since this sector presents considerable evolution possibilities.

The book includes technical information about the coupling of parts made with a natural material in its various forms as well as on innovative adhesives. The contrast between the natural origin of wood and the synthetic origin of adhesives is seen as an example of synergistic coexistence for a technical purpose.
